Cheers to August

Summer is almost over and yet it feels like just yesterday it all started.  It feels as though just yesterday I was minding my own business and my sister made a decision to move to St. Louis, MO to further her career in Youth Ministry.  Just yesterday my mom sat us down and told us she has breast cancer.  Just yesterday my dad shared with us he needed to have spinal surgery in order to regain the feeling in his left arm.  Just yesterday it was my birthday.  Just yesterday my little sister moved, my mom had a mastectomy, my dad was playing the guitar and today I am thankful for everything that has happened but it has all happened so quickly.

Why does time go by so fast?  Why does everything have to happen all at once?  All I know is that things happen for a reason and sometimes we might not be able to ever figure out what the reasons are or why, but we have to move forward.

I am at the hospital with Mom to take care of an infection she has been battling since her procedure earlier this summer.  Once this infection leaves her poor healing body she can move on to her chemo therapy plan.  It is an out patient surgery, and she was able to go in earlier this afternoon instead of early this evening.  We can only hope that this is the last surgery she will need before her reconstruction surgery next year.  Mom is a trooper and takes everyday with a grain of salt.

Chemo plan is as follows: 3 weeks of chemo and then a week off for 6 months.  Not too bad.  Following her chemo she will have radiation for 4-6 months.  Keep my mom in your thoughts and prayers, they are all appreciated!

On a lighter note, I recently got to see my best friend GG!!  It was so nice to catch up.  We have really never gone more than a few weeks of seeing on another. However, this summer has been insane and almost 2 months had gone by since E and GG were able to reunite.  It felt so good to talk and be ridiculous with her.

In addition, I was able to have breakfast with my other bestie, Natasha and caught up with her over some yummy bagels at Einstein Bagels.  We talked about my little godson and how freakin' cute he is and about life and dealing with stuff one day at a time :)

At the end of the month I will be celebrating a 10 year anniversary with my best guy friend, Ethan.  It will be the party of the year, with games, E and E trivia and other surprises too!!  We are awful planners, but thanks to Kaytee, Ethan's wife, I know it will be amazing!

Peace and chicken grease,
E

Good Morning

Why are eggs so good??
Why is coffee so wonderful!!??
Just thought I would update my blog while enjoying a delicious breakfast!

Mom is doing well!  We are looking forward to her getting her drains out very soon.  I will be touching base with her again later this afternoon in between my meetings at work.  Mom actually has updated her blog, so she must be out and about, which is good.

On another note...  work has been so time consuming.  We are reaching the end of the month and as always the pressure is on. I take one day at a time and know that my team and MNS is working hard to meet goals, help the students and have a successful center.  We are ranked in the "top 10" for our region, we were #5 yesterday.  As you know I am a competitor, I want to be in that #1 spot.  We have a healthy amount of amazing teachers and staff that I know we will make it to that spot sooner than later!

This upcoming weekend I will be moving my sister to ST. LOUIS, MO!  I am looking forward to the 14-15 hour trip with Eli, but also sad that I will be leaving her in another state when I fly home.  She has worked so hard to get to where she is.  The church that she is going to be working at is welcoming her with open arms and have been so very supportive of her decision to delay her trip to move, due to our mom's situation.  I know she will really bring great things to this community because she is smart, hard working and an amazing woman.  Stay posted because as you know, I WILL TAKE ROAD TRIP PHOTOS!!

Hope you all enjoy your morning like I have sippin' on my coffee and eating my......  EGGGS!!!

Post Op Mom and Day 1

Surgery went well!  Mom had two cancer tumors the size of ping-pong balls and three lymph-nodes removed.  One lymph node, sentinel, had cancer.  The surgeon was very optimistic and explained that chemo is definitely a high possibility in addition to radiation.  We will know more information in a few days after they examine the cells of the cancer a bit more.

This entry was taken from Mom's blog update that I wrote for her:

Greetings Family and Friends!

We are so thankful for all of your kindness!  Mom is doing very well today.  Eli and Bobby have been taking very good care of her since they are both at home.  "Mom slept like a baby," Eli shared with me this morning when I checked in.  Bobby has been giving her the medicines religiously, since Mom has a low tolerance for pain.  Bobby has been so smart with asking the doctors all the good questions like, "what should she not do?" and "when should I give her the medicine, before or after she has gone for a walk?"  He will get a gold metal for being the best husband in the world when everything is over!!

Mom needs a lot of support with day to day activities.  Eli has been so very patient and has not left Mom's side.  Eli helped mom with breakfast today and went on a few walks with her as well.  Mom is totally LOVING the fact that she can take showers, with assistance of course!!  (Breast Cancer Fact:  You can take a shower!  In previous years showers were frowned upon becasue of moisture seeping into the unwanted areas of this type of procedure).

During one of Eli's walks with Mom, Carol, a neighborhood friend, met up with them for additional company.  Mom is in wonderful spirits and I know that Cancer is not a word that will ever define my mom, bravery, courage and having the biggest heart, are words that define her.

Friends and family have been so supportive!  Neighborhood friends have provided their love and even some home cooked meals.  Plus, Mom is in a support group and they made enough meals for a little over a week for Mom, HOW SWEET!  Thank you again!

I will be visiting this evening for a little while, maybe Eli and I can get Mom in the mood for either Sex and The City movies and or Harry Potter!  If not, just being in her presence is enough for us!

With Love,
Eva

Potomac Nationals

Yesterday I had the pleasure of throwing the first pitch at the Potomac Nationals game!  It was a blast!  I also had J. Smoker, one of the catchers, sign the ball I threw.  This was an event for work, we are one of the sponsors for the team this season.  Yesterday was a fantastic opportunity for us to promote my job since it was Middle School Science Day and over 3,000 students were in attendance.  I thnk the mascot had a thing for me...

Hysterical!!

Here I am getting ready to throw, but I had to get the crowd excited and cheering for me!!

I was glad to be a part of this!!  I had a blast and would totally do it again!

My Mama

As many of you know, my mom has recently been diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

My mom is a fighter and I know that everything will go well.  She has been very well informed of the process and the post operation goals.  She will be having a mastectomy and then followed by reconstructive surgery after a few months.  My mom is a very strong, strong woman and hearing her tell my sister and I about this whole situation was one of the hardest conversations she has ever had to have with us.  With my mom being so well informed about what breast cancer entails for her, makes both my sister and I very confident about being with her through this process knowing that everything will be just fine.

During these past few weeks everything has been so up in the air about when she will go in for surgery and finally we have the date, June 23rd.  My family, Eli, Bobby and I will be there the day of to support her.  Since we got the date my sister has canceled her move to St. Louis to be here for my mom post op, and to see her back on her feet.  Eli and I will be road trippin' the weekend of July 4th instead of this upcoming weekend.

I will keep you all posted, but in the meantime, please visit my mom's blog, where she goes into more details about her procedure.

Things I Love!

Happy Sunday Posting!
All about E today!

I have spent over 5 hours this afternoon catching up on facebook, blogs, updating my pintrest.com account and shooting the shit online!  It felt great.  I was also productive and organized my room and shoes :).  It is so nice every now and again to have E time, something I do not do often.

Cleaning my shoes up was an ordeal!

More things I loved about today, such as my morning coffee in this special mug:
This Tigger Mug was given to me by Eli one year for Christmas when we were younger.  This was the first year she bought me something with her own monies.  I have always used this for my morning coffee and or late afternoon cup of JO!

I am leaving for Montreal in 10 days and I am so grateful to have this handy little traveling tool that I will plan on continuing to use forever!

Thank the heavens to this Passport!  I have had the fortune of traveling to:
1. Paraguay
2. Europe:
     a. Italy
     b. Germany
     c. Austria
     d. Spain
3. Nicaragua
4. Costa Rica
5. Bahamas

Looking forward to all my new adventures out of the country!  To good times :)

I love love love my friends:

They are so much fun and crazy in their own ways, but I am not sure what I wold do without any or all of them!  Very grateful for sure :)

The WORST COMMUTE in the snow!

It all started when I left work at 4:30 pm.

The road heading toward 66 was icy and slippery.  I made it to 66 safe and sound and felt good because I assumed that 66 would have been salted or plowed... SOMETHING!  Nothing, nothing was done to 66 at all.  Luckily I was against traffic, well this was not the case when everyone and their mom wants to get home.  It was slow but cars were moving.

5:30 pm I get off 66 and ended up taking the Centerville Rd exit because 66 was starting to get really backed up and I did not want to even try the FFX Co. PKWY further down and worry about getting stuck on the ramp.  After this exit is where things got ridiculous.  (I did notice my lights flashing inside my car, the radio was in and out and the lights in the dash were going in and out).

Once I could see the first light off the exit on 28 (Centerville Rd), I was so excited, I knew I would be home soon, no worries about this 1.5 hour commute, I was almost there.  At this time my mom called to see if I was okay, I told her I was half way there.  Well moments after this phone call my car got stuck in ice.  I realized that I was not the only one who was stuck, this was the case with everyone ahead and to the side of me.  I rolled down my window to hear people talking about getting people our of the way.  I then decided to yell out, "HELP".  I needed to get out!

An Asian man ( GOD BLESS HIM ) came to the rescue.  Rolling my car in reverse and forward was not doing the trick.  He pushed my car for about 15 minutes with my help of moving my car back and forth.  I reversed and went forward slowly and this simple, quite, kind man pushed my car though the light and I just kept going, NO RED LIGHT was going to stop me.  I rolled the window down again and waived like I have never waived before and yelled out, "THANK YOU".  I wish I could have seen out my back window, but due to the inclement weather, I was unable to see the man's smiling face after he saved me.

At this point I was drying my eyes, because I started to get emotional thinking that I would be stuck forever...  yes FOREVER!

Once again, I felt at this point, it would be a bit easier to get through the roads because nothing could top what just happened.  I was wrong, I finally got on Braddock Road, my favorite road.

"GEMINI, you will make it, GEMINI we have been through worse".  I was chanting this as I was making my way down the road about to pass Shirley Gate Road.  All of a sudden, my car slid in slow motion (it is always in slow motion) and I hit the curb to the right and almost knocked down a mailbox.  The weight of the car hitting the curb was so bad that the SRS light kept flashing.  I had a minor panic attack because the airbags could have gone off but they did not!  To top this off I had already been noticing my car lights inside acting funny, plus my radio was out.  GREAT!  Roughly, about 10 minutes of yelling and rocking my car back and forth I finally got out.  I was so determined to get home, that I would have pushed my car all the way home if I could.

6:45 pm roads were still bad, not much had changed... I made it to the 123 intersection and sat in my car for another full hour, yes one whole hour, which was worse then anything before this... My car was about to die, yes DIE.  It needs either a new battery or alternator... whatever that is.  So by the grace of GOD, my car was able to slide into the gas station at University Mall, I parked it, dropped off my keys and requested a call in the morning to tell me what the heck is wrong with my car.  The mechanic was there, who lives in Triangle, VA ( HE IS NEVER GETTING HOME), said he would do his best to see what is going on and call me tomorrow.

7:55 pm Started to walk home from the gas station in 3 inch HIGH HEELED BOOTS.  You all know how I roll, IN CLASS!  I walked in the snow UP HILL in high heeled boots.

Got home at 8:30 pm and laid in bed to call people to tell them about a series of unfortunate events during this awful, awful day.  I am not going to work tomorrow...
